LaVanda Thornton

LaVanda R. Thornton, 90, of Waterloo died of natural causes Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home. Graveside Services were held Thursday, September 24 at the Smithfield Rural Cemetery, Monona. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family at Mary Holman, 1657 Longfellow Ave, Waterloo, IA 50703.

LaVanda was born November 7, 1918 in Winneshiek County to Richard and Sophia Mechlenberg Suckow. She married Lloyd Robert Thornton December 21, 1938. He died January 22, 1981. LaVanda was a homemaker in her own home.

Survivors include her children, Earl (Betty) Thornton of Waterloo, Mary (David) Holman of Waterloo, Joann (Jim) Jordan of Waterloo, Norma (Gary) Westcott of Evansdale, Donald (Carole) Thornton of Evansdale, Delores Peverill of Denver, CO, Lois (Willis) Ott of Elkader, and Karen (James) Wygle of LaPorte City; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Delbert Suckow of Postville and Dwayne Suckow of Oelwein.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Sandra Kay Thornton, who died in January 1973; two brothers, Willis Suckow and Harold Mohs; and two sisters, Velma Miner and Verna Mae Schnuelle.

Eileen Hammon

Eileen B. Hammon, 79, of Waukon died Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 19 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was held in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Eileen Betty Hammon was born July 25, 1930 on her parent’s farm in Ludlow Township, rural Postville, the daughter of Lynn Mayhue and Daisy Clara (Thornton) Livingood. She was baptized and confirmed at Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville and attended the Little Red School House in Ludlow Township and Waukon High School.

February 25, 1950 she married Roger Honn at Forest Mills United Methodist Church. They farmed together in the rural Rossville area for several years. She and Roger owned and operated Honn’s Clothing Store in Waukon for many years and Honn’s Garage in Waterville. They were later divorced.

June 16, 1984 she married Francis Speth in Waukon. Francis died
in 1986. Eileen managed the Vets Club and the Village Inn Motel, both in Waukon, for many years.
June 18, 1988 she married Charles Hammon at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Eileen and Charles lived on Heytmann's Landing in rural Lansing.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and was a 4-H leader. Eileen enjoyed baking cakes for weddings, working puzzles, fishing, playing bingo, and taking care of her vegetable and flower garden. Her favorite times were spent with her family.

Survivors include her children, Steve Honn and Debbie Honn, both of Waukon, and Kevin (Kim) Honn of Center Point; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Les (JoAnn) Livingood of Lansing; and a sister, Lynnette (Ron) Heilig of Colfax, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands Francis and Charles, who died in 1993; a daughter, Cathy Miller; and two sons, Brian David Honn and John Lear.

Casketbearers were Chad and Jason Troendle, Cody and Clinton Honn, Jeremy Hogan, Jamie Cahalan, Chris Crawfard and Ben Seibert.
